Intensive Farming Operations
CALF REARING, CHICKEN & PIG FARMING
When animals are in close quarters the outbreak of disease is of constant concern and this issue must be closely monitored.
One of the easiest methods of reducing the likelihood of disease outbreak is to provide the animals with a high standard of wellbeing along with good hygiene practices which include competent cleaning and sanitising programs. Our Vetgene Surface Cleaner has excellent application for breaking down solids that are encountered in these areas and our Vetgene Surface Sanitiser and Halamid kill a wide range of pathogens that are found in these environments.
Halamid is also useful as a skin anitseptic that can be applied to animals with any cuts or scraps to help prevent infection which if left untreated can cause animal suffering and loss of profits.
The excellent efficacy of Halamid® against problematic bacteria and viruses in farm and veterinary disinfection is confirmed by numerous laboratory tests and field trials.
Biosecurity is relevant all along the ‘farm to fork’ chain and starts by effective farm disinfection. Halamid® is a livestock disinfectant that can be used in all areas that possibly need disinfection - animal houses, equipment, vehicles and footbaths. Farmers successfully apply this livestock disinfectant by spraying, nebulisation or (thermo) fogging. Veterinary disinfection whether on-farm or in the clinic is done with Halamid®. In the dairy industry, Halamid® is used to disinfect cow teats as well as milking equipment. And in poultry farming, hatching eggs are disinfected with Halamid®.
We refer to the specific technical bulletins to learn more about recommended concentrations and application methods.
Halamid® is the right disinfectant for poultry farming as it has been proven active to amongst others :
Bacteria
- Enterobacteria
- E. coli
- Listeria
- Pseudomonas sp.
- Salmonella sp.
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Streptococcus faecalis
Viruses
- Avian influenza virus
- Avian reo disease virus
- Celo virus
- Newcastle disease
- Gumboro disease
- Infectious bronchitis virus
- Infectious bursitis virus
- Pseudo bird pest virus
Nebulization and fogging
When the poultry house is equipped with a water nebulization system, poultry farming disinfection is done by fogging a Halamid® solution through this system. Using Halamid® as a disinfectant for poultry farming in this way, proves not only to be very effective but also easy to apply and very cost efficient.
Egg disinfection
Halamid® is also an excellent disinfectant for hatchery eggs. The sequence is cleaning, rinsing, disinfection and drying. To prevent absorption of the solution by the eggshell, the temperature must go up a few degrees in each consecutive step.
Halamid® is the right dairy cattle disinfectant as it has beenproven active to amongst others :
Bacteria
- Enterobacteria
- E. coli
- Listeria
- Pseudomonas sp.
- Salmonella sp.
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Streptococcus faecalis
Viruses
- Aujeszky disease virus
- ECBO virus (orphan virus)
- Foot and mouth disease virus
- Pox virus
- Vaccinia virus
Cow teat disinfection
A universal dairy cattle disinfectant must be suitable for cow teat disinfection and at the same time it should take away other sources of contamination (via milking equipment, bare hands).
A 0.3% Halamid® solution is used for cow teat disinfection, after each milking, or once a day for non-lactating cows. Disinfect with either a pure Halamid® solution in water or with a Halamid® based formulation.
In order to improve the overall result and minimize contamination risk, milking equipment is also disinfected with Halamid® and the farmer should disinfect hands while handling cow teat by dipping them into a 1% Halamid® solution.
Halamid® is a product that covers all cattle farming disinfection needs.
Halamid® is the right disinfectant for pig farming as it has been proven active to amongst others :
Bacteria :
- Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae
- Enterobacteria
- E. coli
- Lawsonia intracellularis
- Listeria
- Pseudomonas sp.
- Salmonella sp.
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Streptococcus faecalis
Viruses
- Aujeszky disease virus
- Encephalomyocarditis virus
- Porcine parvovirus
- Reo virus
- South African pest virus
- Swine fever virus
- Teschen virus
- Vesicular swine disease virus
Lawsonia intracellularis
Lawsonia intracellularis is responsible for Porcine Proliferative Enteropathy, also know as ileitis, a problematic and costly disease that needs to be eradicated by pig farming disinfection. Halamid® is one of the very few disinfectants for pig farming proven effective against Lawsonia intracellularis : a 0.3% Halamid® solution with a contact time of 30 min effectively kills the bacteria (McOrist, 2005).
